Use this Health Penalty Calculator app to quickly estimate your tax penalty for not having health insurance. You can see your penalty amounts for 2014, 2015, and 2016 which increase each year.
The Individual Mandate in the Affordable Care Act (Obamacare) requires that you and your family members have health insurance coverage. You will have to pay a penalty when filing your taxes (line 61 on tax form 1040) if any family members who are claimed on your taxes do not have health insurance.
The official name of the health tax penalty is “Shared Responsibility Payment”. It can also be called a fee, fine, penalty, individual responsibility payment, or individual mandate.
If you did not have health insurance in 2014, you will have to pay your penalty when filing 2014 taxes which are due on April 15, 2015.
If you did not have health insurance in 2014 and were not aware of the penalty, there is a special enrollment period on healthcare.gov from March 15 to April 30, 2015 to sign up for health insurance in 2015 so that you do not have to pay a penalty again next year.
